What the work is
Sitting with people while they work
Most of it is watching someone do their job, timing it, and writing down what actually happened rather than what is supposed to happen. It is quieter and more patient than it sounds.
Writing things people will rely on
A system nobody can follow gets ignored, and a business runs on the version in someone’s head instead. The work is getting it precise enough to hand over and have it survive a normal week.
Being corrected in front of the client
We read everything back to the person who does the job so they can tell us where we got it wrong. That only works if you would rather be accurate than look right.
